The HASAMI PORCELAIN Collection is made from a proprietary blend of porcelain and clay. The newest HASAMI PORCELAIN Grey Collection is made from white porcelain, which is a stronger material than stoneware or clay. While HASAMI PORCELAIN is not designed for commercial use, the line is very durable for everyday use at home. As with any ceramic-ware, strong impact or dropping may cause chipping or breaking so care is necessary.
HASAMI PORCELAIN ceramic plates, mugs and bowls are dishwasher safe. HASAMI PORCELAIN Richlite trays and plates featured in the newest Grey Collection are also dishwasher safe. All HASAMI PORCELAIN wooden trays need to be hand-washed and dried immediately.
HASAMI PORCELAIN ceramic-ware is microwave safe. However, HASAMI PORCELAIN wooden trays and Richlite trays are not microwave safe. None of the pieces in the HASAMI PORCELAIN Collection are safe for oven or stove top use.
Hasami is the name of the town responsible for manufacturing the HASAMI PORCELAIN collection. Based in Nagasaki prefecture with a population of just 14,940 people, the HASAMI PORCELAIN collection is made in several different factories and kilns throughout the town's rural countryside. HASAMI PORCELAIN was originally designed in Venice Beach in 2010 by designer and creative director, Takuhiro Shinomoto, who is also the owner of the Tortoise General Store.
The Grey Collection, which launched in 2023, is designed with the same modular template as the rest of the HASAMI PORCELAIN Collection. All trays, bowls, mugs, and plates will stack seamlessly together.
The unique porcelain and clay mixture used to make HASAMI PORCELAIN is prone to variation. Factors such as the weather, the mineral content of the clay, and the chemical reactions inside the kiln during firing creates variation in color, texture and sometimes even shape. This is part of the natural beauty behind HASAMI PORCELAIN and a highly coveted characteristic of the line among craftspeople and users alike.
