On June 29th and June 30th, Tortoise General Store welcomes Tomonori 'Tomo' Tanaka, designer of Picklestone, to hold a pop-up accompanied by a demonstration titled 'The Secrets of Recipe-Free Japanese Cooking.'
It will be an excellent opportunity for people to learn the benefits and convenience of using Picklestone to achieve the authentic taste of Japanese food.
In the first half of the demonstration, Tomo will share how to:
- Prepare katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) and konbu (kelp) broth.
- Utilize soy sauce effectively.
- Combine bonito and kelp broth with soy sauce to create traditional Japanese pickles.
After the demonstration, we will sample essential Japanese dishes, including pickles, osuimono (clear soup), and onigiri (rice balls) provided by Onigiri sun in Little Tokyo.
Recognized with a Good Design Award in 2018, Picklestone consists of a stone weight, a cylindrical glass bottle, and a wooden lid that simplifies the process of making tsukemono, traditional Japanese pickles and preserved vegetables.
The newest addition to the lineup is the T-Unit, which makes it easy to create ochazuke, a long-beloved dish in which dashi or tea is poured over rice and eaten with pickles.
Preorders for Picklestone and Picklestone T-Units are available now, and ticket announcements for the demonstration will follow soon. A limited supply of Picklestone products will also be available for purchase in-store during the event.
Please stay tuned for more details!
