Date:

Fee: $120 / person
Description:
Tortoise General Store invites you to Sashiko Workshop Part 2, created for those who have already taken an introductory Sashiko workshop with Sanae at Tortoise or elsewhere and wish to continue developing their practice.
In this session, participants will learn how to prepare sarashi by hand-sewing two layers of fabric together, transfer traditional Sashiko patterns, and refine core stitching techniques. The workshop will also focus on how to begin and finish stitches without knots, allowing the reverse side of the fabric to remain as clean and balanced as the front.
Hanafukin is a traditional Japanese stitched cloth rooted in the Sashiko practices of the Edo period, when hand stitching was used to strengthen and preserve valued fabric. Over time, these cloths also became meaningful gifts, often made with wishes for happiness, health, and good fortune.
Through the steady rhythm of stitching, this workshop offers an opportunity to engage more deeply with the material, process, and tradition of Sashiko.
Requirements:
Workshop confirmed once 8 participants register (max 8). Participants must be at least 14 years old.
History:
Creativity is a core part of Sanae's work. Through traditional Japanese handicrafts like sashiko, weaving, natural dyeing, calligraphy, and gardening, she weaves mindfulness, cultural heritage, and sustainable living into her everyday practice. Sanae shares that "Sashiko is not just beautiful to look at, but expresses the beauty of wabi-sabi—the beauty that makes us who we are." The slow, intentional act of stitching one stitch at a time becomes a meditative practice that quiets the mind, encourages acceptance of stress, and fosters emotional regulation. It is also a practical, sustainable art form that extends the life of clothing made from plant fibers—a powerful reflection of care for the earth and each other.
