During the Nara period (710-785), Nara city became famous for producing specialty fabrics as the textile trade boomed. Since 1956 the Shirayuki company also based in Nara, Japan has been making fine woven mesh cloths for everyday uses. Early on, Shirayuki innovated by stacking scrap fabrics to create multi-layered textiles. These extremely useful mesh cloths became favorites among family and friends, and eventually to a wider audience.
