Brass Incense Holder and Tray
Pairing Riki Watanabe’s classic UNI Tray in with a machined brass incense holder brings together contrasting materials, finishes, and forms. The broad, flat plane of matte stainless steel provides a cool, subdued ground for the rounded, warm-toned brass holder, creating a subtle interplay of light and dark, flatness and circular geometry.
The Uni tray collects ash while providing a defined surface for the holder. The uncoated brass will gradually darken and develop a patina with use, or can be cleaned to restore its original luster. Together, the two pieces unite distinct materials and complementary forms in a simple, integrated design for burning incense.

Designed in 1976, the UNI Tray is a classic of modern Japanese industrial design by Riki Watanabe (1911–2013), a pioneer in bringing functional, accessible design into everyday life. Originally conceived for the exchange of money and small items, its shallow stainless steel form and gently curved edge make it easy to handle while maintaining a simple, enduring profile.
The A.278 brass incense holder is an original design developed by Japanese retailer SLOW LIVING. Machined from solid brass, the compact, weighted holder accommodates a range of stick incense, including bamboo-core incense and palo santo. Its straightforward construction emphasizes the material itself, which is left uncoated to develop a natural patina over time. The surface can also be polished to restore its original luster.
