“Since opening our store on Abbot Kinney in 2003, we’ve hosted Yo’s wood carving class - a longtime favorite that many described as almost meditative. I hope this Sashiko stitching session offers you the same sense of calm, and that you enjoy this precious time with Sanae!" -Keiko, TGS owner

Tortoise invites you to the Sashiko workshop, designed for beginners who have never done Sashiko or hand sewing, or for those who want to learn the principles of the Sashiko stitch. You will learn how to stitch Sashiko using Sashiko thread and needle without a hoop, as well as how to hold the fabric and the Sashiko needle.

Requirements:
Workshop confirmed once 8 participants register (max 8).

History:
Creativity is a core part of Sanae's work. Through traditional Japanese handcrafts like sashiko, weaving, natural dyeing, calligraphy, and gardening, she weaves mindfulness, cultural heritage, and sustainable living into her everyday practice. Sanae shares that "Sashiko is not just beautiful to look at, but expresses the beauty of wabi-sabi—the beauty that makes us who we are." The slow, intentional act of stitching one stitch at a time becomes a meditative practice that quiets the mind, encourages acceptance of stress, and fosters emotional regulation. It is also a practical, sustainable art form that extends the life of clothing made from plant fibers—a powerful reflection of care for the earth and each other.
