"Traditional Japanese sake cups, known as masu, are pronounced like the Japanese verb “to increase” or “to grow”. For this reason it is believed that drinking from a masu will increase your luck and bring prosperity. When celebrating a special occasion like New Years, a glass is placed inside the masu and sake is poured until it overflows like a waterfall. An act of celebration to lift the spirits, the Japanese believe that waiting to see the sake overflow into the masu creates a beautiful moment of suspense, which brings the present sharply into focus."

Description:
Sake can be drunk in two ways: with a short clear glass or a square wooden cup, called a "masu".  Masu cups are small square wooden boxes used to measure rice portions in Japan during the feudal period. Cleverly, most are made of hinoki or cedar wood, which have natural antibacterial properties to keep food and drink fresh. Today, masu cups are used almost exclusively to drink sake at special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, holidays or weddings.  Pair with a glass shot glass like this sake cup by Toyo Sasaki to perform the ceremonial waterfall pouring of sake at your next celebration.
