Demonstration: Japanese Curry Brick with Sonoko Sakai - SATURDAY October 15th, 2022
Sonoko Saikai, acclaimed Japanese-American home cook and Tortoise General Store friend, will lead a 40 minute outdoor cooking demonstration Saturday, October 15th to 10 participants. The demonstration will show how to make delicious, chemical additive free, palm oil free, healthy and environmentally conscious Japanese curry bricks from scratch that you can store away until you're ready to drop into your favorite curry dish. Sonoko's curry bricks have been met with rave reviews and have even been featured in the NY Times! Each participant will take home a curry brick making kit and enjoy a live tasting of a finished curry dish using a fresh batch of Sonoko's scrumptious curry bricks.

Sonoko herself will be at Tortoise General Store from 3 PM to 5 PM to sell a variety of pantry items including freshly made curry bricks, curry powder, baking mixes, live miso, seasoning, and aprons. Sonoko will only be available to demonstration participants from 4 PM to 4:40 PM, but her pantry items will be for sale from 3 PM to 5 PM.
Sonoko Saikai is a Japanese-American chef, cooking teacher and food writer with several cookbooks to her name including, The Poetical Pursuit of Food: Japanese Recipes for American Cooks, Rice Craft, and the award-winning Japanese Home Cooking: Simple Meals, Authentic Flavors. When she couldn't find any pre-packaged Japanese products in the market that were simply, healthy and environmentally conscious, Sonoko created her own line of home kits starting with her own curry spice. With a name that means "garden," Sonoko believes the cycle of cooking begins and ends in the garden and teaches with a philosophy based on freshness, seasonality, simplicity, beauty, and economy.
Each kit comes with:
