History:
Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1949, at a time when new ideas were more welcome in Japanese society. Yoshi Morohashi began his carpentry work as an apprentice at the age of 16. While studying alongside master carpenters, Morohashi worked on over 100 houses in Tokyo and Yokohama. Yoshi traveled to New York in 1974, longing to explore more creative freedom in woodworking. With an arsenal of classically trained skills from his seminal years in Japan, he opened a woodworking shop. During his time in New York, he participated in multiple projects with well recognized artists and architects. Yoshi and his team received the Distinguished Architecture Award for his collaboration with Tod Williams and Billie Tsien on the Eisenberg residence. He eventually returned to Japan in 1993 and became a father a year later. By 1998 his family moved back to the U.S. and settled down in Los Angeles. Here in L.A., Yoshi collaborated with architects and finished projects for many well-known artists and celebrity clientele. Morohashi’s work has been recognized by the LA Times, as well as featured in LA Modern. With his knowledge of wood, exacting measurement, and carpentry skills, Yoshi Morohashi’s spirit lives on in these minimalist bowls and boards.
