Description:
A Japanese windchime is called a furin.  These chimes are typically hung indoors near windows–or outside underneath an awning–during the sweltering hot summers months.  Its gentle sound when it catches the wind helps listeners cool down mentally, a kind of acoustic therapy.  This furin has a simple glass dome with a natural bamboo clapper at its center with a strip of linen to catch the wind.  Its elegant and somewhat rustic design gives a nod to the natural beauty of bamboo, and captures the simple beauty of the summer furin.

Measurements:
2.3'' W x 10.6'' H

History:
Originating in Kyoto, Kohchosai Kosuga is a fifth-generation atelier that combines traditional bamboo shaping techniques and contemporary design concepts. The bamboo used in Kohchosai Kosuga products are of the Madake and Mousouchiku varieties. Carefully crafted by skilled hands using bamboo sourced from the mountains of Hyogo, Nara and Kyoto known for their incredibly strong and durable bamboo reeds. No preservatives or chemicals are used in the harvesting or making of these pieces and the procuring and drying of each bamboo piece is a long process. The bamboo is harvested between the cold winter months of November to February. When it gets warmer in March, the oil from the bamboo is removed through steaming in a special kiln. After that, it is hung to dry in the sun for over one month.
Materials:
Glass, bamboo, linen

Variation:
Due to the natural material, there will be variation in the appearance of the bamboo and linen.  Over time, you will see these materials patina and change with use.

Care Instructions:
Hang in a secure spot inside near a window–or outside underneath some protective covering.  The glass is lightweight and will break with impact so avoid dropping or displaying during strong windy conditions that may cause the glass to make contact.  If the linen strip becomes damaged at any point, you may use another material or even paper as a substitute.
