Workshop: Kusaki-zome Furoshiki - Steam dye technique edition with Instructor, Alisa Benfey - 1pm to 3:30pm October 26
Discover the beauty of natural dyeing with our Kusaki-zome workshop! Did you know that flower petals, fallen leaves, and kitchen scraps can create stunning colors and patterns on fabric using simple kitchen tools?
Join textile designer Alisa Benfey for an immersive 2.5-hour session, where you'll learn the basics of natural dyeing and the unique steam dyeing technique. Participants will create their own beautiful dyed fabrics using an ecological approach that brings vibrant natural colors to life.
You’ll leave with two stunning silk furoshiki pieces—one in white and one in a pre-dyed base. Furoshiki are versatile Japanese fabrics used for wrapping gifts and carrying items. During the class, you’ll also master special folding techniques!
Workshop Details:
- Location: Outside Tortoise General Store
- Duration: 2.5 hours 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm
- Attire: Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes that can get dirty. Don’t forget to bring a hand towel!
Class Size: Limited to 6 participants.
Age Requirement: No minimum age; all skill levels welcome.
Cancellation Policy: Classes are transferable but non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled.
Fee: $150 per person, including an instruction booklet and two silk fabrics to take home.
History of Instructor:
Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, Alisa Benfey moved to the United States at age 16. She earned a BFA in graphic design at CalArts and an MFA in textile design at Tama Art University in Tokyo. She works under her textile brand IROCOH and teaches workshops around Los Angeles.
