Takizawa Bear Puzzle
This playful, handmade puzzle is modeled after the Ussuri brown bear, native to Hokkaido. Hokkaido, the northernmost prefecture in Japan, is known for paper production and woodworking. Takizawa Plywood celebrates its local industry by creating "paper-wood," a new plywood made with colorful, recycled paper and veneer layers. Plywood is often thought of as a cheap and throw-away material, but this bright three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle is an example of Takizawa's transformative innovation. Unlike painted wood, this colorful paper will never fade or flake off. The Takizawa Bear Puzzle can be used as a fun and challenging toy or an often-admired decorative piece.
Each piece is handmade, and there may be some color variation throughout the "paper-wood". Each piece will have a slightly different grain and cross-section of plywood.
Takizawa Plywood, is located in Hokkaido, Japan. They are the first wood designers to develop “Paper-Wood,” a plywood made from recycled color paper and layered veneer. All of the wood was grown locally in Hokkaido. “Paper-Wood” has a colorful cross-section surface with beautiful aesthetic expressions absent from conventional plywood. This material has been used in numerous buildings and interiors by renowned designers and architects. It received the Good Design Award in 2010.
