Woodcarving Workshop with Yo Takimoto - Summer 2023

Description:
We are grateful to welcome back traveling woodcarving teacher, Yo Takimoto, after 3 years away! As always, Yo's peaceful 3 hour woodcarving workshop takes place outside, on the sidewalk in front of our new location in Mar Vista. Students will be led through a meditative process of carving wood into the shape it desires. All materials and tools will be provided, and students will go home with their finished piece.
Minimum age to participate is 10 years old, and participants under 18 must have an adult supervisor with them that has also purchased a seat in the same class.
Due to the risks involved when using a carving tool, students are required to sign a liability waiver before the start of class.
We love your pets, but please know that pets are not allowed to be present at workshops. Only students who have paid a class fee are allowed to be present while the workshop is taking place.
This woodcarving workshop is held outside and can be cancelled due to weather. We recommend students wear appropriate clothing to be outside including sunscreen and/or outerwear.

Japanese master carver, Yo Takimoto , has taught woodcarving classes at Tortoise General Store for over 13 years. Yo's style of woodcarving is called kikezuri, a special Japanese wood carving style. Each participant will select a special piece of wood from Yo's personal collection, which includes ancient wood samples from different parts of the US and Japan. Each participant will then “let the wood speak” and slowly carve to reveal the wood's desired form.
