Kosuga Shikainami Basket
These eye-catching Shikainami Bamboo Baskets by Kohchosai Kosuga come in black (dyed by Japanese lacquer) and a natural bamboo color. Hand woven in Kyoto, these crafted bamboo baskets are first steamed in high pressure, then sun dried for over a month. The strips are then carefully shaved to refind them and then a final hand-weaving process by an artisan creates the beautiful rounded and looped shape. The mesh "Shikainami" pattern is inspired by the ocean waves.
Due to the 100% natural material and handmade nature of this object, there will be variation in color, texture and shape.
Since its establishment in 1890, the Kohchosai Kosuga company has been dedicated to exploring the qualities of bamboo at their workshops and facilities. Kohchosai Kosuga specialized in fine bamboo arts and crafts and produces a wide rang of products, such as flower baskets, tableware, bags, and lighting. The craftspeople at Kosuga are true innovators of the medium - shepherding bamboo into contemporary culture that extends well beyond Japan while using traditional techniques passed down through 5 generations.
