A wood prized for its rarity and grain, these remnants would typically be discarded, yet designer Taku Shinomoto saw in them the starting point for something considered and precise. Laminated into 25mm boards and stacked into 75mm units, the material is governed by a strict structural logic: repetition, joinery, constraint.

Within that system, form emerges. Knots, dark spots, and natural fissures are not imperfections to be hidden but details to be read, each one evidence of the wood’s origin and character. Minimal joinery holds the components together, allowing the geometry to speak without interference.

Then the system extends beyond the object itself. Rather than conventional model names, each design is assigned a letter that follows the same 75mm grid used to build it, tracing the geometry of the form into a typographic identity. Object and graphic share the same underlying structure.

That governing logic extends to each piece’s identity. Rather than conventional names, every model is assigned a letter of the alphabet, its letterform derived from the same 75mm grid used to build it. Object and graphic share one structure. The full series is planned across all 26 letters, with “a” through “e” introduced here.

Solid and hefty by construction, the atik styles function equally as seating, side tables, or plant stands. But the deeper ambition is form as a subject of study, where architectural thinking, material honesty, and graphic identity are resolved into a single coherent whole.

Measurements:
Model #A: 12 in W x 18 in H
Model #B: 12 in W x 17 5/8 in H
Model #C: 11 6/8 in W x 17 3/4 in H x 8 3/4 in D
Model #D: 14 3/4 in W x 17 6/8 in H x 6 in D
Model #E: 9 in W x 17 6/8 in H

Variation:
Variation in wood grains and patterns will be present from piece to piece.

History:
Takuhiro Shinomoto, has traversed borders and cultures, and brought modernity to traditional Japanese ceramicware for a worldwide audience.
