A new take on the classic wooden building block. These balancing stones are inspired by the Japanese "tumi-ishi" practice of balancing stones. Each block has been hand crafted in Yoshino, Japan, with walnut from local forests. The blocks have many different sides, allowing for infinite stacking combinations. Although tumi-isi blocks can be enjoyed by all, they help children exercise hand-eye coordination and stimulate sensory development. Or, use tumi-isi as a statement decorative piece, celebrating the unique and beautiful balance of the natural world.
Each block is handmade and will have a slightly different grain. You may not receive the exact blocks in this picture.
The practice of "tumi-ishi" has been around for centuries, but this modern design of tumi-isi comes from Daimon Kanno at design office A4. Every step of the tumi-isi production process, from sourcing the materials to quality checking, is completed in Yoshino district in Nara. Nara is known as one of the leading producers of excellent timber in Japan. Forests occupy 77% of the area, and forestry has been active since ancient times by taking advantage of the rich cedar and walnut. Since tumi-isi's debut in 2008, many brands have attempted to imitate this design. Only tumi-isi is the original, with local materials and craftsmen that provide undisputed quality.
The sizes of each stone varies between 2"-4".
Japanese cedar, jojoba oil and beeswax finishing. 100% organic and 100% non-toxic. Each set comes in an organic linen drawstring bag.
We recommend cleaning your blocks with a little vinegar and warm water on a soft cloth if necessary. You can rub a small amount of jojoba oil on your blocks if they start to lose their luster. Keep dry and avoid storing in direct sunlight.
