Description:
Written by Katsumi Komagata in 2000, this whimsical cut-out paper book follows the story of a tear, as it travels down the narrator's cheek and into the ground. Komagata cuts out the shape of a tear in each page, through stormy clouds, by inquisitive dogs, and into the natural world. The simple and direct poem talks to the power of empathy, and encourages a belief that sadness is a part of the natural world, and not something that isolates us. Each line is written in Japanese and French, with an English translation at the back.

History:
Founded in 1986 by graphic designer Katsumi Komagata, One Stroke is known for their deceptively simplistic paper-cut out works of art. Although One Stroke started as a graphic design studio, after the birth of Komagata’s daughter, the company pivoted to producing tender and beautiful children’s books. One Stroke’s exquisitely crafted books can be found at the MoMA gift shop and other art centers around the world.
