Description:
Kumiki puzzles are an essential example of Japanese minimalism. Inspired by architechtural techniques from Japanese antiquity, these puzzles firmly interlock to create imaginative shapes without using any metal fasteners, nails, or clamps. This lion puzzle can be enjoyed as a challenge for both children and adults. Many architects still use Kumiki puzzles as a way to teach students the durability of well thought out design.

Variation:
Due to the handmade nature, there is natural variation.

History:
Kumiki wooden puzzles are made with the same technique that is used for building Japanese Shinto shrines and architectural buildings. Buildings that were built without metal fasteners often survived better in earthquakes, which made the art of tightly fitting wood highly valued. Tsunetaro Yamanaka created the first kumiki wooden puzzles in around 1900. Only highly skilled craftsmen can create these complex puzzles. The fourth master, Shigeo Yamanaka, has continued the over 100-year tradition while creating completely new forms.
